On these
pages we will
recommend to you a good variety of places where you can eat in
St.Anton. They
are all places that we have tried out and feel are great value for
money. We
have chosen restaurants that range from low to high cost and have
indicated
which bracket they will fall into. These are all restaurants that we
are always
checking out to make sure that the standards do not fall - they are NOT
restaurants that are paying us to be featured here. So we rely on small
donations
from our readers to keep this site up on running. We hope that you will

Haus Schindler
This great
little hotel is one of the best-kept secrets in St.Anton
- not many tourists would know just how good a restaurant it has or
even that
it is a restaurant at all. The food is generally traditional with fresh
local
produce being used. There is a nice selection of good international
wines with
some very nice Austrian labels included. The restaurant itself is very
cosy
with just two small dining areas. Booking is essential as it is very
popular
with the locals. To find Haus Schindler head up the hill (Alte
Arlbergstrasse)
from the roundabout below the Galzig bahn, you will find Hotel
Schindler about
300m up the hill on the right - but remember booking is essential. www.hotel-schindler.at
I would rate
this restaurant cost
wise as medium.

Ganderwirt
This
is a really friendly restaurant run by husband &
wife team, Otmar & Simone - Othmar used to run Pub37 in St.Anton
for many
years. You will be assured of a very warm welcome here along with some
excellent home cooked food - if Hirsch (Deer that will have been shot
on the
mountain behind the Gander Wirt) is on the menu I would strongly
recommend that
you try it. There is a great selection of wine and schnapps too!! The
restaurant, which is a haunt of many locals, has a very homely feel to
it and
has cosy wood panelling throughout. If you like to eat somewhere with a
real
local Austrian feel to it then this could just be the place for you.... The restaurant is
actually in the village of St.Jakob that joins St.Anton so
the best way to get there is by taxi - but make sure you book first.
I would rate this
restaurant cost
wise as medium to low.

Bodega
This is a very popular and lovely little place to eat or
drink with a great atmosphere; it is a Spanish Tapis bar
and is very
informal.
It does get very busy so it is best to get there as early as possible
in the
evening or be prepared to wait a while for a table (they do not take
bookings)
if you are intending to eat. They open until the early hours of the
morning and
the food is good and of course the best thing with Tapis is that you
can all
share, try different things and just keep ordering more until you have
had you
fill. The wine is also very good here but not too cheap. The dishes
range
between 5 - 10 euro. To find Bodega walk along Dorf Strasse (the main
street)
and you will see it, slightly set back and more or less opposite the
Post
Hotel.
I would rate this
restaurant cost
wise as low.

Floriani
Here is a great
place to go if you have kids, all kids love pizza
and this little family run pizza restaurant is really good. There is a
great
menu with an atmosphere to match. Very cosy and close to the town
centre as
well as being extremely reasonably priced. One of my favourite places
to go and
eat with friends but be warned - you can not book ahead so you need to
be early
or prepared to wait... there is a little bar to sit and have a drink at
whilst
waiting. To find Floriani just walk up the hill from the roundabout
below the
Galzigbahn (Alte Arlberg Strasse) and it is about 200 metres up on the
left.
I would
rate this restaurant cost
wise as low.

Hazienda
This
is one of my favourite
restaurants in St.Anton, the
atmosphere is great, the music too and as for the food
-
excellent. Let me
start off by saying that if you would like to eat here then you will
have to
book - this is a measure of the popularity of The Hazienda. The menu is
truly
international and complemented by a large selection of very good wines.
My
advice is to try some of the Austrian wines, especially those from
Burgenland
as they are extremely good and not often found outside Austria. Even if
I am
not going to eat here I still think that it is also a great place to
just come
for a drink, many of the locals come here and the dress code is smart /
casual.
The bar offers a great variety of brandy, whiskey and rum along with
some of
the best service in the village. The Hazienda is situated below the
Testa Rossa coffee and cocktail bar (why not have a cocktail there
first?) - just go down the stairs and you will find yourself in this
great restaurant. www.hazienda.at

rate this restaurant cost
wise as high.

The Museum
The
Museum Restaurant is one of the nicest settings in
which to eat in St.Anton, originally built in 1912, then
used as the SS HQ
during WWII before falling into disrepair, it was renovated in 1978.
Today it
is not only a restaurant but also a ski museum, I would recommend that
after
your main course you spend a few minutes upstairs wandering through the
little
rooms that house the museum. Here you will find all sorts of items and
information pertaining to the Arlberg and it's history. There are rooms
dedicated to Hannes Schneider the pioneer of the modern Arlberg ski
technique
and also to the old Hospiz in St.Christoph. Whilst the food here
is not the best that you will find in St.Anton it is still
extremely good and you will not
find a better setting, be it for a romantic meal for two or a group end
of
holiday celebration. The wine list is not cheap either starting from
just over
30 euro per bottle but hey - you are on holiday. To find your way
to the Museum
head up the hill from the roundabout at the bottom of the new Gondola
station
(Alte Arlbergstrasse) and after about 100m turn right into Rudi Matt
Weg, the
museum is on the left adjacent to the ski slope just after the
"Underground on the Piste" après ski bar. You will need to book
in
advance. www.museum-restaurant.at

wise as high.

Ben Venuto
Many
people regard Ben Venuto as one of the best
restaurants in St.Anton and for sure it is right up there. The
wide-ranging
international cuisine is normally excellent and the wine list equally
impressive. The service is, as you would expect from a restaurant of
this
class, very good and the prices are not too expensive, especially when
compared
to those one would find in London. For me the main downside of Ben
Venuto (and
this is purely down to my own taste) is the ambiance and style. The
dining area
is very large and open, very much in the Conran style, and I cannot
convince
myself that they have got the lighting absolutely right. So if you are
looking
for somewhere traditional and cosy this is not the place for you but if
your
tastes run to large, lively restaurants with extremely good food that
is wonderfully presented then check it out.... Ben Venuto is
situated
above the wellness centre opposite the old train station and backing
onto the
ski slopes. www.benvenuto.at

restaurant cost
wise as high.

Dorf Stub'n
This is a nice traditional restaurant in the heart
of the village. The menu is quite extensive with plenty of Austrian
dishes. The
service is very good, with waitresses in traditional dress. A nice
place to go
and eat with the family. You can also have a drink in the bar
beforehand which
is always vibrant, especially for après ski. You will find Dorf
Stub'n
underneath the Hotel Kristall and next door to the Testa Rossa cafe in
the main
pedestrian area. After your meal you could also venture downstairs to
Bobos and
party into the night.

Pomodoro
This is the main pizza restaurant in St.Anton and it is
situated next to the Raiffeisen Bank and underneath the Haus Zentral at
the
Galzig end of the village. It is very lively & loud in here, more
of a
pizza hut than an Italian restaurant like the Floriani up the road.
Friendly
staff but very busy early evening. You can also get a take away pizza
here if
you want to stay in and watch the TV with your pizza!
I would rate this restaurant cost
wise as low.

Hotel
Post
As one of
the top hotels in the village it is only to be expected
that the Hotel Post has an extremely good restaurant. There are two
dining
areas, my preference being for the cosy little stub'n as opposed to the
large
main dining area. There are two choices of menu, both featuring a good
variety
of international and local dishes. The wine list is also extensive and
I would
certainly recommend that you try an Austrian wine from the burganland
region,
these are especially good. The Hotel Post is in the centre of the
village on
the left as you walk down from the Galzig end. One of the best places
to eat in St.Anton in my opinion.

Antoner Hof
This five star hotel
boasts one of the best restaurants in
St.Anton
and it is a real gastronomic treat. A superb
wine list
compliments a
wonderful
menu in this traditional style restaurant. Not cheap but it is not
hugely expensive either. I would say that for the quality of dining it
is very reasonably priced. An ideal place for a
celebration, the little stuben (dining room) has a real fire and a
lovely cosy feel to it, the lighting is just right too. The table
service is, of course, excellent and there is a great bar to
either
start off in or finish in.... To reach the Antoner Hof turn off the
pedestrian area by the
Sport Hotel and walk down to the main road, turn left and it is about
150
metres on your left. www.antonerhof.at

San Antonia Pizza
Another great
pizzeria but this time at the opposite end of the
village in Nasserein, so if you are not staying up in Nasserein you
will need a
taxi to get here. If you are staying in Nasserein then you follow the
main road
in the direction of the Rodl Hutte and you will see the San Antonio at
the top
of the street on the right, booking is probably advised.

Griabli
After the après ski crowd have disappeared down the slopes the
Griabli transforms itself into a very nice restaurant. I have not yet
tried the
Griabli in the evening but I hear that it is highly recommended - I
will (for
research purposes) be correcting this omission once the season starts
and will
then publish my thoughts here..

Kandahar
Not many people would think of going to the Kandahar for an evening
meal but actually the Kandahar serves
excellent Thai &
Indian food from 7pm
onwards. The setting is very in keeping with the food as the Kandahar
naturally
has an eastern style. Seating is in small or large booths or tables for
two.
The ingredients are fresh each day wherever possible with others being
imported
via their Asian agent in Innsbruck. The wine list is also very good
with many
excellent Austrian varieties. I have eaten there just recently I would
have to
say that the Thai food was some of the best that I have tasted and I
would
highly recommend it. It is a good idea
to book in advance because it is not a large restaurant and
it does get fully
booked quite quickly. Kandahar is next to the Volksbank in the
pedestrian area.

Sonn Bichl
The Sonn Bichl
hotel is a little out of the main village area of St.Anton but it is
well worth a visit. The
food is wonderful with many traditional
Austrian dishes on the menu. There are two dining areas both of
which are very cosy and in the fashion of an Old farmhouse parlor.
Lots of wood panelling and subtle lighting make this a lovely place to
enjoy a romantic evening. There is an excellent wine list with
prices per bottle around the 25 - 30 euro mark. To get to the
Sonn Bichl you should head along the road between Nasserein and
St.Jakob and the hotel is on your left. It is about a 15 minute walk
from St.Anton so it is probably best to take a taxi.

The Roessle
This restaurant is excellent, however there is bad news - it is not in
St.Anton! So if you really wish to go there you will need to have a car
in the resort or take a taxi. The restaurant is in the village of Braz
which is about 25 minutes from St.Anton in the direction of Bregenz.
The food is wonderful and presented with great flair. There is an
extensive wine list and the desserts are just to die for. They have an
A la Carte menu as well as a fixed price 3 or 4 course set menu.
Neither are expensive and the set menu comes in at under 30 Euro! There
are several dining areas of varying size all of which are
delightful. You will find many people from St.Anton making the journey
to eat here because it really is that good. The owner, Martin Bargehr,
also has a great
repertoire of rude limericks, which is pretty impressive for an
Austrian!! The Roessle is opposite the Raiffeisen Bank in Braz. www.roesslebraz.at

The
Hotel Schwarzer Adler
The
restaurant in this hotel is extremely good and if possible you should
book to eat in the original old stuben(dining room) which is over 400
years old and a lovely place to eat. The food is mainly traditional
tyrolean cuisene and is prepared to a very high standard by head chef
Stephen Dialer. The restaurant uses only fresh produce, much of which
is grown at the local farm owned by the hotel. The wine list is pretty
extensive with a good selection from around the globe not just Austria
- but my recommendation is of course the Austrian wines which are now
rated as some of the best in the world. Booking will be essential
especially to eat in the old stuben. The price range is very
reasonable with main courses between 18 & 30 Euro - the last
time that I ate here a meal for two (main course and dessert) with a
nice bottle of red was just under 100 Euro.

The Im Grieswirt
This
restaurant has just been refurbished and will offer good value
traditional Austrian food. It is now run by Alexander and Sabine
Kertiss who have the Lux Alpinae hotel so I know that the food will be
very good. Also it will be very reasonably priced - certainly this
summer it was one of the cheapest places that I fould to while away the
hours in the sunshine! It is furnished in a simple, traditional
Austrian style and is well worth checking out. The restaurant is next
door to Pub 37, at the Nasserein end of the pedestrian zone turn right
and it is on the right.
I would rate this restaurant cost
wise as low.

The Skiing Budda
If you like Asian food then this could be the place for you. You will
find the “Skiing Buddha” in the unlikely location of the
Arlrock climbing hall adjacent to the railway station but don’t
let this fool you – the food here is very good and
authentic. Having opened this season it is quickly gaining a good
reputation and is becoming very popular which tells you all that you
need to know. The food is very sensibly priced and will not hurt your
wallet with starters from 5 – 10 Euro and main courses priced
between 10 & 20 Euro. The portions are also generous and the food
is delightfully presented. I would also recommend that you try the
sorbet – it is to die for

wise as low.

The Seiten Blick
New for the 2009/10 ski season was the Seiten Blick. Regular visitors to
St.Anton will now the building as the old Haxnstuben. However gone is the dark
and dingy interior of the Haxenstuben, replaced with a light and airy
restaurant that offers three different menus throughout the day. You have the
choice of a lunch menu, light snacks and also a full dinner menu for the
evenings. The menu is Austrian & International and has been created by head
chef Michael Gfall and his wife Franziska who own the Seitenblick.
Michael is a highly qualified chef which will quickly became apparent to anyone
sampling his fayre. The prices are sensible and great value for the food being
offered. You will find the Seiten Blick just in front of the Galzigbahn next to
the Anton Hotel.
I would rate this restaurant cost
wise as low.

Der Waldhof
The Waldhof hotel is owned by Andrea & Michael Ladner. Michael used
to have Ben Venuto restaurant in the village and has a deserved reputation as a
great chef and restaurateur. This season they have decided to open the hotel
restaurant up to non-residents which is great news for those of us who love
great food! There is not an “a la carte” menu and you will get the same choice
as residents of the hotel but do not let this put you off what will be one of
the dining experiences of your holiday. The Waldhof is situated out of the
village centre in the Stadle area of St.Anton so depending on where you are
staying you may wish to order a taxi.
I would rate this restaurant cost
wise as medium.
